Bathroom Renovations: When It’s Time to Remodel

Bathroom Renovations: When It’s Time to Remodel

At Vazana Construction, Inc., in South Bay, we notice that many times homeowners will make renovating their bathroom a low priority. Even though the bathroom is used on a regular and daily basis, and is seen and accessed by just about anyone who enters your home. This is often due to the fact that it is primarily seen as a practical room used for necessary activities.

Rooms that tend to get priority over the bath when it comes to home renovation are the kitchen; den, living room or family room; and the master bedroom. The kitchen is linked to the creation of life-sustaining food and emotionally invigorating good times; the den is all about comfort, entertaining, and style, and the master bedroom is often seen as personal space that serves as a reflective and regenerative haven. Thus, these spaces often get priority when a homeowner is looking to remodel.

Still, if you are considering renovating your home or if you have done so already but did nothing about the bathroom, it is not too late to add it to your list of spaces to improve. Doing so can offer many benefits, including providing energy and cost savings, creating a stylistically unifying area, and offering an uptick in your home’s resale value.

We’ve compiled a list of five signs that tell you it’s time to renovate your bathroom. Any one of these on its own should provide you with the impetus to do so.

Looks and Feels Very Rundown

One of the things that we notice as general contracts when we enter into a South Bay home is how the atmosphere of each room is a result of all of the elements within the room. Thus, if your bath looks old or rundown making changes may be the way to go.

Imagine how you’d feel about your bathroom if you totally reinvigorated it? As an example, maybe the cabinets in the room are making it a dark and dreary place. If that’s the case, then installing new ones can transform that sullen space into one that is inviting and comfortable.

Cutting Water and Energy Use

There are many ways in which remodeling your bathroom can lead to cost savings. As an example, a new toilet can lower water consumption by up to 5 gallons per flush. On average, each person in your home flushes the toilet each day five times. By changing to a toilet that is classified as being low-flow, which means it uses less water per flush, you can save about 20 to 30 gallons of water per day for each person in your household. That’s a total of 9,000 gallons per year per person.

You can also cut water consumption significantly by installing sinks that offer faucet aerators with low-flow features and a shower that has a low-flow head. Utilizing these devices will cut your water use by 40 to 55 percent. Along with lessening the amount of water you use, it will also reduce your energy costs for hot water.

Create a More Healthy Environment

Upon entering a bathroom, one of the things that an observant general contractor will notice is any musty smell that might be present. Such an odor, which indicates that you may have mold and mildew growing, is an indication that your bathroom environment is unhealthy.

Further inspection may reveal leaks under cabinets, in walls, or around bathroom fixtures. There may be obvious signs of mold also. Carefully cleaning the room may or may not take care of the problem. You may need to eliminate old cabinets, take up flooring, and completely remove wall coverings. Engaging in a full-scale renovation of your bath may be the most efficient and safest thing to do if mold is present.

Stylistic Uniformity

Sometimes we go into a home in the South Bay area and most if not all of the rooms have been renovated except for the bathroom. The old style bath that was never part of the remodeling process draws unwanted attention by the fact that it simply doesn’t fit with the rest of your home.

If your home reflects who you are, your style, and taste, then you’re sending mixed messages by treating your bath’s look and feel like its stuck in some sort of time machine or that it’s some aspect of an important cultural tradition that’s worth preserving. Consider creating a uniform statement throughout your home and include your bath.

Making Life a Little Easier

New bathroom elements, such as shower stalls, cabinets, toilets, sinks, and flooring, that have been created from materials that are designed for easy maintenance, upkeep, and cleaning will simplify your life. Also, with these new elements, you should not have to call the plumber for some time. That will also result in money savings.
